Description

In Climate Change UNDP works to support the countries in developing, promoting and implementing policies and actions in the framework of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. 
UNDP has been working across the following Climate Change Adaptation Signature Programmes:

  • Integrated Climate Change Strategies: UNDP supports countries to formulate Integrated Climate Change Strategies that will assist national and sub-national governments to develop and strengthen policies, institutions, capacities and knowledge for integrated green, low-emission and climate resilient development. It also involves utilizing a full range of supportive financing mechanisms to support that development.
  • Advancing Cross-sectoral Climate Resilient Livelihoods: The UNDP is scaling up climate resilient livelihoods and risk management. This includes advancing Climate Resilient Livelihoods, supports countries to advance sustainable economic development in rural areas in the face of climate change. Assistance is also provided to strengthen climate information and early warning systems for climate resilient development in developing countries. 
  • Ecosystem-Based Adaptation: The UNDP supports countries to maintain and enhance the goods and services provided by biodiversity and ecosystems to support resilient livelihoods, food, water and health. We assist countries to preserve and restore natural ecosystems that can provide cost-effective protection against climate change threats.
  • Fostering Resilience for food security
  • Climate Resilient Integrated Water Resource and Coastal Management: The UNDP supports countries to promote integrated, ecosystem-based, climate resilient management of the world’s major freshwater and marine trans-boundary waters systems through improved water and ocean governance.
  • Supporting Integrated Climate Change Strategies

 

 


Duties and Responsibilities

The main objective of the assignment is to provide daily support to UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub in management of climate change portfolio. The intern will work under the guidance and technical supervision of CDT Team Leader of UNDP for ECIS. He/she will also work closely with the ECIS UNDP Country Offices.

Specific tasks are as follows: 

  • Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Support in implementation of CDT climate change projects (Climate financing, Climate box, EU for climate)
  • Conduct a research to collect and analyses the best practices (globally and in the region) in policy, legislation and institutional arrangements to follow up the Climate Action in the framework of the UNFCCC. The research will enable better Capacity Exchange planning.
  • Assist in other basic research i.e. collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources.
  • Support the preparation of CC events: global climate Summit organized by the United nations Secretary General and COP 25, global NDC workshop.
  • Collaborate with research institutions and other stakeholders within the region to undertake CC research and needs analysis for the implementation of on-going initiatives.
  • Assist in projects planning, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of programme initiatives.
  • Collaborate in the development of knowledge and communication products content and design.
  • Assist in the drafting of reports and organization of meetings.
  • Assist in preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
  • Assist in administrative and substantive support to meetings and conferences, preparation of background documents and presentations, handling logistics etc.
  • Perform other work related tasks assigned by the Supervisor.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • a) Currently be enrolled in the last year of Bachelor’s degree, or b) be enrolled in a second university degree or higher, or c) have graduated less than a year than a year ago in environmental science, disaster risk reduction, climate change or other relevant field;

Experience:

  • Relevant professional experience in environment, climate change and/or disaster risk reduction would be a strong advantage;
  • Particularly knowledge of environment, climate change and DRR issues would be a strong advantage;

Language skills:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required for this assignment. Knowledge of Russian is an asset

Financial Issues

Internships within the UN system are unpaid and subject to conditions the applicant must get familiar with prior to signing his/her internship agreement. The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.

UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.

Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
It is important to note that interns are responsible to arrange for their own visa and residence documents, and need to plan for these well in advance.

Subsequent Employment
The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
