The person hired for this postion will be have an active role in promoting cost-effective soutlions to move freight more efficiently. In today’s economy, goods often travel thousands of miles. This flow of product enables increased selection and lower prices. However, it also results in traffic congestion, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and toxic air pollution, all of which affect public health.  All told, the global freight transportation and distribution system accounts for nearly 8% of total carbon pollution. It is also projected to grow rapidly over the coming decades.
EDF works with some of the largest consumers of freight services to put freight onto a more sustainable path. Together, we are developing and implementing strategies that increase the efficiency of freight movement and cuts pollution.
Reports to: Senior Manager, Corporate Partnerships
 
Overall Function

  • Advancing freight carbon management: EDF has partnered with leading researchers to produce and promote a freight carbon management framework. Several leading companies are already piloting this framework. This intern will play a significant role in disseminating this framework and its critical findings upon release.
  • Buidling industry support for a strong new emissions regulations for trucks. EDF is advocating for a strong new rule governing truck fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas  emissions. Such a rule will be critical in our effort to prevent climate disruption. This intern will assist in efforts to identify industry partners that also support a strong rule and work collaboratively to advance the prospects of this rule.

 
Key Responsibilities
Which specific tasks and/or what type of work will the intern be performing.
Specifically, the intern will:

  • Assist Senior Manager for Goods Movement in promoting freight carbon management framework.
  • Research corporate environmental commitments and positions of companies  with large truck fleets.
  • Develop communication materials targeting corporate decisionmakers with information about the new truck efficiency rule and the importance of their involvement in pushing for a robust new standard for truck efficiency and emissions.
  • Analyze the economic and environmental benefits of broadly adopting freight best practices
  • Write one-pagers, blog posts and articles that communicates key steps companies can be taking to reduce the environmental impact of goods movement; and
  • Research freight movement in the U.S., including economic and environmental impacts, near-term opportunities to reduce environmental harm while maintaining profitability; and market dynamics.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in environmental management, economics, or related field preferred. Undergraduate candidate entering senior year will also be considered.
  • Interest in working on the business implications of environmental issues.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in performing robust research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to work with colleagues of varied backgrounds and experience.
  • An ability to work both independently and as a team member in a creative environment.
  • Exceptional personal organization and attention to detail.

Summer internship is 35 hours per week, 10 weeks.  Start and end dates are flexible.
