The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is a non-profit organization working on policies to reduce conventional pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector. For support of our Commercial Aviation and Climate Change team we are offering an internship opportunity.


This position will work to identify, refine, and promote policies and methods to reduce the climate impact of domestic and international aviation by promoting more efficient aircraft and airlines. The work outputs of this position will be immediately applicable to ongoing policymaking at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Working under the direction of the ICCT’s Aviation program staff, tasks will include:


Researching, evaluating, and proposing methods to support a new CO2 certification requirement for new aircraft, to be finalized by ICAO in 2011
Technical support for ICCT’s new initiative on domestic aviation, including work to develop emission inventories and mitigation scenarios for relevant nations
Organizing workshops and giving presentations to educate policy-makers and journalists
Reviewing the work products of consultants to the ICCT on aviation technology costs


Qualifications desired

The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, most likely with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, or energy and resources, along with a familiarity with the aviation industry. Policy experience and an understanding of economic analysis are desirable. The position requires excellent quantitative, analytic, and research skills, along with strong written and verbal communications skills. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, self-directed, and creative and strategic in problem-solving and identifying policy needs.

 

Organizational details


The intern is expected to work full-time for 10-16 weeks during the summer recess (Ideal May 9 through Aug 5, 2011)


Location of the internship is in the ICCT office in downtown San Francisco, CA


The internship will be paid; salary will depend on experience (full-time rate of $1,900-$2,600 per month)
