Directory Entry : Every person on Earth deserves a healthy environment and the fundamental benefits that nature provides. But our planet is experiencing an unprecedented drawdown of these resources, and it is only by protecting nature and its gifts; a stable climate, fresh water, healthy oceans and reliable food; that we can ensure a better life for everyone, everywhere.

Description

Conservation International (CI) seeks to increase global investment in nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation (Ecosystem-based adaptation, REDD+, and Blue Carbon) . One important barrier for scaling up  investments in those solutions is the challenge of measuring their non-greenhouse gas benefits . Though the non-emissions benefits of these activities can be significant, they are complex and multi-dimensional. The challenge of knowing what to measure, and the lack of standardization of ways to measure important adaptation, biodiversity and other benefits is an obstacle for the public and private funders who are interested in supporting Nature-based solutions that generate multiple benefits.

CI is developing a standardized set of indicators and monitoring guidelines that will help donors, the private sector, policy makers and practitioners to measure the effectiveness of their investments in nature-based solutions for climate change and seeks an intern to support various aspects of this project.

Objectives:

The responsibilities of this internship include:

  • Conduct a literature review to identify the adaptation, mitigation and biodiversity outcomes of nature-based climate change interventions
  • Assist in the development of a typology to categorize nature-based climate change interventions and outcomes
  • Conduct a literature review to identify candidate indicators to measure adaptation, mitigation and biodiversity outcomes of nature-based climate change interventions
  • Support in the development of presentations and briefs to communicate the objectives and initial results of the project.
  • Support in the organization of an expert workshop to review initial results of the project.

Requirements:

  • Applicants should: be currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral program in a field related to the project.
  • Ability to commit to 5-6 months of full-time support to the project at CI's offices in Arlington, VA. Some flexibility exists to accommodate class schedules.
  • Familiarity with approaches to climate change mitigation and adaptation, especially nature-based approaches such as Ecosystem-based Adaptation, REDD+, and Blue Carbon.
  • Understanding of basic social and environmental monitoring and evaluation methods
  • Ability to identify relevant documents and extract technical information about social and environmental monitoring from the scientific and policy-related literature.
  • Ability to search scientific literature relevant to social and environmental monitoring and evaluation and synthesize results and recommendations.
