Description

The Blue Economy program is a new effort of Conservation International’s (CI) Center for Oceans. This initiative focuses on fostering a sustainable development framework that integrates conservation, subsistence use, and ocean-based sustainable production systems, including fisheries, tourism, oil and mineral wealth extraction, bioprospecting, sustainable energy production, and marine transport. The Blue Economies program will work from the local to the national level to achieve the following:

  • Position the value of ocean ecosystems within economic development agendas using ecosystem services valuation, natural capital accounting, natural capital protocols for ocean-related industries, and impact mitigation protocols.
  • Work with countries and the private sector to develop and support market-based mechanisms that incentivize healthy oceans, including strategies and interventions that enhance product market value and minimize ecological impact, offsets, payments for ecosystem services, taxes and subsidies.
  • Catalyze and direct increased private sector financing toward ocean governance and conservation through engagement with financial intermediaries, developing business cases, supporting local enterprises, and designing diversified finance mechanisms.
