Directory Entry : Every person on Earth deserves a healthy environment and the fundamental benefits that nature provides. But our planet is experiencing an unprecedented drawdown of these resources, and it is only by protecting nature and its gifts; a stable climate, fresh water, healthy oceans and reliable food; that we can ensure a better life for everyone, everywhere.

The Economics of Ecosystems Biodiversity - TEEB, a a collaboration of the world’s leading environmental economists and biodiversity, made one of the most compeling case for society to make nature’s values visible, and for decision-makers and the business community to take actions that incorporate the role of biodiversity and ecosystem services—from freshwater provision to nutrient cycling—in economic activities. The impact of this powerful effort was immediate and, as result, one year later, we already have a number of TEEB initiatives around the globe. Another important initiative, the World Bank-led Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services – WAVES is a pragmatic call  toward the integration of ecosystem services values into income accounts, with the ultimate goal promoting sustainable development worldwide through the implementation of comprehensive wealth accounting. CI is playing a leading role in supporting both initiatives, working both at the national and regional levels to foster the integration of ‘green accounting’ in development planning and analysis.

This proposal is for an intern to work on providing support for CI’s work on both initiatives, with particular emphasis on activities that seek to combine economic and biophysical assessment of ecosystem services, participatory process, spatial planning, and policy analysis.
