Internship Purpose: ClientEarth is seeking an enthusiastic intern to work in our biodiversity programme. The role is based in our main office in London and you will have the opportunity to be involved in research on legal, scientific and policy matters for the exciting Sustainable Seafood Coalition (SSC) project. These include [competition law]; assessing and applying successful governance models; identifying and inviting potential new members from the retail, supply and foodservice sectors; scoping consumer perception of seafood and its labelling; developing and applying the Key Performance Indicators for the coalition.

You will have a relevant degree in science, policy and/or law. While this role is primarily focussed on scientific, technical/legal research to support the SSC project, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate and possibly present at SSC meetings, and execute their findings to develop work of the coalition.

Key responsibilities
-    Legal research on competition law, proposed CMO and CFP reform;
-    Scientific research into sustainable fishing and aquaculture practices;
-    Technical Research leading to basic quantitative and qualitative analysis of seafood sourcing policies;
-    Comparative analysis of governance structures in voluntary groups; existing seafood alliances in the EU, and domestic regulations/policies of EU countries on seafood labelling and sourcing;
-    Scoping work on seafood businesses operations, consumer behaviour and influential celebrity chefs and food writers;
-    Developing potential Key Performance Indicators for the work of the SSC;
-    Producing briefing notes for staff;
-    Taking the minutes at SSC working groups and member’s meetings;
-    Liaising with and assisting Biodiversity staff;

Required skills and competencies
-    Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to write for and present to various audiences – legal, technical experts and lay people;
-    Strong scientific, technical and policy/legal research skills;
-    Ability to digest, analyse and use technical information and data;
-    General understanding of corporate social responsibility;
-    Self starter who takes pride in their work;
-    Ability to grasp quickly and accurately new and complex concepts;
-    Confident phone manner. 

Person Specifications
-    Hold a degree in science, policy or another relevant discipline and/or a law degree;
-    Some work experience in a relevant environment;
-    Academic or practical experience in sciences or other technical fields highly regarded;
-    Positive attitude and a strong commitment to working for the environment. 

Flexibility: Although you will be mainly supporting the work of this specific programme you might be required occasionally to provide ad-hoc support to other programmes.
Internship Arrangements: We ask that interns commit to a minimum of 3 days per week for at least three months. The maximum duration for internships is six months. In instances where interns are not working full time, they should ideally commit to set days each week.
ClientEarth cover interns’ work-related expenses (travel and lunch) via a contribution of £10 for each day spent in the office.
