In 2008, CIFOR initiated the Global Comparative Study on REDD (GCS-REDD) to understand national REDD+ policy processes, learn from sub-national REDD+ projects, and develop solutions to technical constraints in measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of emissions reductions, the synergy of REDD+ and adaptation, and the management at the landscape scale to facilitate adoption of low carbon emission policies and measures. The goal is to provide REDD+ policy-makers and practitioner communities with the information, analysis and tools they need to ensure effective and cost efficient reduction of carbon emissions with equitable impacts and co-benefits: the ‘3E’ criteria.

We are looking for three enthusiastic, proactive and talented interns to join our policy research team in CIFOR’s GCS REDD+ Module 1 for a media based discourse analysis related to REDD+ issues at the sub-national level. The goal is to examine how the media portrays policy processes and the different frames that actors use to define and influence REDD+ policy debates. The selected interns are expected to conduct research in three provinces (Aceh, Central Kalimantan and East Kalimantan) for three months (September – November 2013).

The interns will be provided:

  • Research budget. The amount of the budget will be adjusted based on the research needs.
  • Living, transportation and communication allowances.
  • Health insurance.
  • Airfare ticket and transportation to and from CIFOR office in Bogor to participate in Media Analysis training and presentation of results’ study.
  • Inputs for research report.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Collect newspaper articles, in accordance with specified keywords, and handles coding for the articles.
  • Co-write a research work plan with a CIFOR researcher, before conducting research.
  • Conduct research based on the work plan.
  • Provide weekly, financial and activities reports during the data collection.
  • Present the results at CIFOR Headquarters, in Bogor, at a maximum of six months after data collection.

Requirements

  • Recent graduate or student majoring in environment, forestry, communication, political/social science or other related discipline. The student needs to have met the pre-requirement to start his/her thesis research.
  • Students with working/living experience in the study areas (Aceh, Central Kalimantan and East Kalimantan) are preferred.
  • Motivated to conduct research in chosen province at the specified time (September or October 2013).
  • Driven by a strong interest in doing high quality research related to forestry, media-based discourse analysis, REDD+ issues and climate change.
  • The student must be capable of producing an outstanding, high quality thesis in the given time frame.
  • Fluent in English; excellent both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated experience with Ms. Office particularly Ms. Excel.

Desired skills

  • Good understanding about REDD+ issues and the dynamic of forestry issues.
  • Experience with Ms. Access.
  • Experience in research; can work independently and think critically.

Terms and conditions

  • The appointment will be for 6 months.
