THE OPPORTUNITY

Intern | Advancement Division

The Intern, in close collaboration with the Fund Development team, will conduct in-depth research to help cultivate opportunities to support and increase FishWise’s operating budget. The Intern will explore and prioritize new funding sources and philanthropic trends through desktop research using multiple search engines, websites, and software programs. The Intern will have opportunities to learn about the funding and donor community and assist with strategy development related to this scope of work and research findings. The Intern will also help maintain and improve internal information systems and provide occasional support to FishWise’s grants management operations. FishWise would like to leverage the Intern’s strengths and interests to co-create a work stream that aligns with individual and FishWise goals. 

Reporting 

This position reports to the Traceability Division Director.

Responsibilities

With support from the Fund Development team, the Intern will:

  • Review background documents and identify where to build on existing research or where to start new projects/trackers.
  • Research potential funding sources and create a catalogue (foundations, government, individuals, and public sources).
  • Provide research to inform how FishWise should position its work for increased success with the short-list of funders.
  • Track opportunities for FishWise to contribute to the funder’s strategies and desired outcomes, identify entry points for establishing contact and cultivating relationships.
  • Work with the Traceability Division Director to brainstorm projects in alignment with funding streams that FishWise could pitch in the future.
  • Attend webinars and conduct research on how FishWise can improve donor cultivation and acknowledgement practices.
  • Attend internal meetings upon request to provide input related to this scope of work and research findings.
  • Coordinate logistics for conference calls, webinars, and in-person meetings; record and distribute minutes.
  • Other responsibilities as they develop, based on intern interest areas and FishWise’s needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and to manage multiple simultaneous projects
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment preferred
  • Experience breaking down large amounts of material into cohesive units that can be easily understood 
  • Enthusiasm for fundraising and donor stewardship in pursuit of FishWise’s mission, with experience in fundraising and stewardship a plus (e.g., raising money for a cause, contributing to a grant proposal)

Hours & Requirements

  • This is a temporary, part-time position
  • Internship salary: $19.74
  • Duration of internship is 12 weeks, with possibility of extension
  • FishWise is headquartered in Santa Cruz, CA. This position will be fully remote
  • Work hours: 8-16 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 9:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. (PST or EST, with flexible scheduling options contingent on supervisor’s approval)
  • United States work authorization required
