Position Description:
The Center for Great Apes is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a permanent refuge and sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees in need of long-term life care. The sanctuary is not open as a zoo or tourist attraction, but has established a community education program and serves as a wildlife resource for school outreach programs as well as on-site behavioral study opportunities for students of primatology, anthropology, and related subjects. The Center currently has openings for new volunteers and interns. Internships are a minimum of three months in length and are not a paid or stipend position. However, class credit may be available for students at certain schools.

Interns will assist caregiver staff with duties including: food preparation & feed room maintenance; cleaning outdoor enclosures & nighthouses; daily cutting of fresh browse & vegetation for ape nesting, foraging, & play; making enrichment toys and helping provide enrichment activities for the apes; and processing ape laundry.

Other volunteer opportunities requiring no minimum commitment of hours include: grounds work (working in the vegetable garden, weeding, collecting fallen branches, and spreading mulch on paths); office work (library maintenance and assisting with newsletter preparation); fundraising, helping with special events, and various other support jobs.

Qualifications/Experience:
Volunteers for the Center for Great Apes should be in good health and be able to work outside in the heat and weather for several hours at a time. Volunteers who assist with ape care duties must be at least 18 years of age. Additionally, volunteers working in the vicinity of the apes and assisting with ape care must have a current tetanus shot and have an annual TB test with proof of a negative result.

Salary/funding:
Internships are not a paid or stipend position, however class credit may be available for students at certain schools.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
For interns, we have housing available on grounds which is a shared house with very comfortable quarters. The charge for intern housing (which includes rent, laundry use, kitchen use, and utilities... but not food and incidentals) is currently $100 a week.
