Western Resource Advocates (WRA) seeks a Media and Communications Strategy intern to work in our Boulder office.

Founded in 1989, WRA is a non-profit environmental law and policy organization. WRA's mission is to protect the West's land, air, and water. Our lawyers, scientists, and economists: 1) advance clean energy to reduce pollution and global climate change; 2) promote urban water conservation and river restoration; and 3) defend special public lands from energy development and unauthorized off-road vehicle travel. We collaborate with other conservation groups, hunters and fishermen, ranchers, Native people, and others to ensure a sustainable future for the West. We have offices in Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Idaho.

Under the supervision of the Communications Manager, the Media & Communications Strategy Intern will assist with a variety of communications tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Developing media relations strategies, including press releases and expert statements, media list expansion, blogger outreach, and press conferences (both in-person and telephone press conferences);
  • Significant work on energy issues including building up the energy section of the WRA website and other related content development;
  • Production and maintenance of new and unique communications tools, including online videos, "guerilla marketing," and other potential paid media tools;
  • Expansion of WRA's online and social media presence, including development and maintenance of stand-alone websites on specific issues, in order to reach a wider audience of supporters, donors and journalists;
  • Production and maintenance of communications to supporters, donors and potential donors.

We can't promise that the Media & Communications Strategy Intern won't have to lick a few envelopes from time to time, but we guarantee that you will gain real real-world experience, make great contacts, and spend your time at WRA working on projects that will make a difference in the world (or at least the Western U.S.).

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants should have a strong interest in communications and nonprofit work; should be creative and unafraid to try new things; and should abhor a cliché while always seeking a different and fresh approach to problems and opportunities. Other qualifications we would like are:

  • Communications and media knowledge and experience
  • Familiarity with electronic communications programs and social media
  • Excellent research, writing, editing, and organization skills
  • Ability to work well under deadline

This is a for-credit/ unpaid internship. Please submit cover letter, resume, and one writing sample to andria@westernresources.org
