We are currently seeking a rising senior or graduate student in environmental science, environmental engineering, toxicology, or a related discipline to support projects in our Environment, Risk, and Toxicology line of business for the summer of 2011.  The Environmental Risk and Toxicology line of business provides toxicology, safety assessment, risk assessment, exposure assessment, environmental modeling, and related support that address the full spectrum of potentially hazardous agents, including chemicals, microbes, and radionuclides.  We specialize in identifying and quantifying the effects of environmental pollutants, such as metals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds, on human health and the environment.  We support the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) National Center for Environmental Assessment in developing risk assessments, such as the reassessment of dioxin, Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) assessments, and provisional toxicity values (PTVs).  We also provide fate and transport modeling, exposure modeling, and risk characterization support to EPA’s Offices of Air Quality Planning and Standards and Pesticide Programs to support the implementation of different aspects of the Clean Air Act and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).  In addition, we support chemical companies by conducting risk assessments for industrial chemicals to meet the requirements of the European Union’s REACH regulation.

The intern will perform qualitative and quantitative exposure, toxicology, and/or risk assessments in support of our Federal government clients.  Activities could involve research, data analysis, scientific writing, workshop planning, and document preparation.

This position will be paid on an hourly basis for approximately 15 to 40 hrs per week and could extend into part-time work during the school year and beyond.
