Intern - Climate and Energy (EU Climate – 2030) – voluntary position Based in London office
Internship Purpose: ClientEarth is seeking an enthusiastic intern to work in our Climate and Energy programme. The internship will be at our main London office and you will have the opportunity to be involved in research and analysis of legal and policy matters concerning the design of EU climate and energy law, specifically as it relates to the ‘2030 package’. You will have a degree in law or legal studies, knowledge of EU constitutional law and EU climate law and/or energy law, and desirably an understanding of issues such as the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), the Effort Sharing Decision (ESD), energy efficiency, and renewable energy. This internship is focussed primarily on legal analysis to support our advocacy work to influence the 2030 package on climate and energy. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with a specialised team of climate and energy lawyers based in London, Brussels and Warsaw, and will have the scope to provide assistance in this context. The internship will enable you to learn directly how environmental issues can be tacked through legal approaches. You will join our staff in regular learning and development events and be given full support in developing the skills needed to thrive in a professional environment. You will have the opportunity to hone your drafting skills for a variety of audiences and receive constructive feedback on your work from experienced professionals. Key responsibilities:
- Assist in legal research on issues related to institutional and governance aspects of the current EU climate and energy acquis.
- Support legal analysis through drafting background materials that contribute to the development of ClientEarth’s proposals for effective delivery of European climate and energy targets and objectives past 2020.
- Provide assistance across the climate and energy team on pertinent issues relating to renewables, energy efficiency and state aid.

Person Specifications:
- Hold a law or legal studies degree (essential);
- Demonstrable experience in high quality legal research (essential);
- Fluency in English (essential), and ideally another European language (desirable);
- Positive attitude and a strong commitment to working for the environment essential); &
- Understanding of EU climate law, EU energy law, and/or EU constitutional law (essential).
Internship Arrangements:
We ask that interns commit to a minimum of 3 days per week for at least three months. The maximum duration for internships is 6 months. In instances where interns are not working full time, they should ideally commit to set days each week. ClientEarth covers interns’ work-related expenses (travel and lunch) up to a value of £10 per day spent in the office.
