Job Purpose: ClientEarth is seeking an enthusiastic intern to work in our Climate and Energy programme. The role is based in our main office in London and you will have the opportunity to be involved in research on legal, technical and policy matters across a number of exciting climate projects.. These include engagement with the upcoming revision of EU laws regulating fluorinated gases (HFCs), statutory and policy design for climate financing solutions including the proposed Green Investment Bank, and assessing the climate benefits of potential legal action and law reform across the EU. You will have a relevant degree in science, policy and/or law.  While this role is primarily focussed on legal and technical research to support these projects, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to analyse and apply the law under guidance, as well as assisting preparing advocacy and policy materials, and commenting on media debate. 

Key responsibilities or accountabilities

-          Legal research including EU climate and energy law, UK company law;

-          Keeping abreast of policy and media debate for designated issues;

-          Comparative analysis;

-          Research leading to basic quantitative analysis of potential climate benefit from selected projects;

-          Producing briefing notes for staff;

-          Liaising with and assisting climate and energy staff;

-          Collaboration with and support to other programme areas within ClientEarth (for example, Air Quality, Corporate Transparency etc)

Required skills and competencies

-          Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to write for various audiences – legal, media, and lay people.

-          Strong legal research skills;

-          Ability to digest, analyse and use technical information and data;

-          Self starter who takes pride in their work;

-          Ability to grasp quickly and accurately new and complex concepts and areas of law;

-          Confident phone manner. 

About you:

-          Hold a degree in science, policy or another relevant discipline and/or a law degree;

-          Some work experience in a relevant environment;

-          Academic or practical experience in sciences or other technical fields highly regarded;

-          Positive attitude and a strong commitment to working for the environment.
