In collaboration with the Northwest Director of Philanthropy, the Institutional Giving Manager is responsible for the oversight, planning and implementation of TPL's Institutional Giving program in Washington. This position will be responsible for a portfolio of foundations and corporations currently giving or capable of giving gifts ranging from $5,000 - $50,000.

The primary focus is on identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding foundation and corporate donor prospects. Responsibilities include prospect identification, prospect tracking, cultivation and solicitation procedures, direct solicitations, closing gifts, proposal writing and development, and appropriate gift recognition. This position will also provide writing and other support for the Northwest Director of Philanthropy and other Philanthropy staff including initiating, writing, and managing grant proposals, reports, cultivation and solicitation strategies, and other communications.

Works with the Northwest Director of Philanthropy to establish fundraising goals to support an annual Washington state program budget of $2.2 million and is accountable for these goals. Focuses on long-range strategic priorities, advances TPL's philanthropy goals, and communicates a broad vision to others.

This position is based in TPL's Seattle office.

Essential Functions:

  • 65% Portfolio Management: identifies potential foundation and corporate donors, develops cultivation and solicitation plans, implements and maintains donor tracking system, makes direct solicitations, closes gifts, writes and develops proposals, case statements, and reports. Works with finance staff and program leadership to develop proposal budgets and financial reports. Coordinates and implements foundation and corporate donor recognition. This position also advises the Northwest Director of Philanthropy and Washington State Director on overall fundraising goals, objectives and strategy including TPL-wide initiatives, state programs, and special projects. Works closely with these leaders to aid understanding of states' fundraising goals, progress and implications for current and future fiscal year funding of conservation programs.
  • 20% Provides writing and other support for the Northwest Director of Philanthropy, Division Director of Philanthropy and other Philanthropy staff to include writing and developing proposals, case statements, and reports as well as cultivation and solicitation strategies, and other communications.
  • 10% Interfaces with other TPL staff to build awareness of the Washington philanthropy program within the organization. Develops and maintains relationships with institutional giving counterparts and other relationship managers in the field necessary to secure gifts for the Washington Program from their foundation and corporate donors and prospects. Coordinates TPL-wide activities, such as joint grant requests and stewardship, and participates in regularly scheduled functional team meetings. Works closely with the Northwest Director of Philanthropy and other Project/Program staff to determine effective strategies for identified foundation and corporate donors and prospects. Keeps appropriate staff apprised of key interactions, issues or concerns. Understands and complies with all TPL gift-related policies and procedures and ensures ethical compliance, as defined by the Asociation of Fundraising Professionals.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 3-5 years of experience in nonprofit fund raising
  • Substantial experience in writing grant proposals, letters, reports or similar materials · Demonstrated experience and proficiency using fund raising database programs, MS Office programs and grantmaking research sites
  • Ability to write and edit persuasive materials including grant proposals, reports, letters of inquiry, interim reports, stewardship materials, and informational memoranda
  • Basic accounting and aptitude with numbers; ability to develop familiarity with TPL's finance system by coordinating with finance staff
  • Self-motivation: must be able to work effectively without close supervision and with a variety of people within TPL to keep a number of deadlines moving simultaneously and to provide stewardship for funders. Must display a mature approach to problem solving and be able to produce in an unstructured work environment, based on setting own agenda and priorities
