Long Term Volunteer post: Centre for Alternative Technology Information Service
6 months, starting September 2009

The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is Europe’s leading eco centre. Located in a stunning natural environment on the southern fringe of Snowdonia National Park, CAT welcomes more than 50,000 visitors and offers a wide range of services and educational programmes – from school visits to fully accredited postgraduate degree courses offered on site.
CAT’s free Information Service supports the centre’s mission to inspire, inform and enable by offering free and impartial advice on all aspects of sustainable living. The Information Service answers enquiries by phone, email and at the Visitor Centre Information Desk and produces and updates online information materials.

A long term volunteer with the CAT Information Service will be trained to offer advice on a wide range of topics, from organic farming to ecological building materials and renewable energy technology.  Our volunteer will help research and produce information materials and answer enquiries in writing as well as over the phone and face-to-face.

This post is suitable for a candidate who

·         is passionate about sustainability and the environment

·         is eager to learn as much as possible about renewable energy and sustainable living

·         is passionate about reaching out to people

·         feels comfortable talking to members of the public

·         has excellent written and spoken communication skills

·         can explain complex concepts to a general audience

·         understands basic principles of natural sciences, especially physics

Volunteers are expected to work 40 hours a week. There will be a number of volunteers in different departments at CAT, and there’s usually no shortage of parties and social events. CAT will provide vegetarian meals for lunch but unfortunately cannot help with other costs of living, such as accommodation. More information about volunteering at CAT can be found online at http://www.cat.org.uk/volunteers/vol_content.tmpl?subdir=Volunteers&sku=VOL_LTV
