The Indonesia Marine Program Advisor will play a dynamic and wide-ranging role in securing the long-term sustainability of all CI Indonesia marine programs, with a strong focus on the Bird's Head Seascape initiative, as well as developing new seascape, site-based, and fisheries management initiatives within Indonesia. S/he will be responsible for providing both strategic technical support and management backstopping to CI Indonesia’s entire marine portfolio, including long-term conservation planning, fundraising and proposal development, donor reporting and management, and capacity-building/mentoring of key marine program staff and governmental and other partners. S/he will be responsible for building and actively maintaining relationships with a wide range of partners and stakeholders. The Marine Advisor will also focus significant effort on maintaining effective governance of our external grants program, which currently manages an impressive portfolio of subgrants ranging from small $5-10K grants on up to multi-million dollar grants to a diversity of partners.

The Advisor will work closely with and support the Indonesia Marine Program Director, and will play a critical role in strategic planning for the future of the Indonesia Marine Program and broader CI Indonesia programs – including helping determine the most appropriate niche for CI-Indonesia in improving fisheries management in Indonesia. The Advisor will also liaise closely with the Vice President of Asia-Pacific Marine Programs and CI headquarters staff as requested by the Vice President of CI-Indonesia. esponsibilities:

Key Job Requirements:

Experience & Skill:

  • The marine advisor position requires a strong marine resources management background, with a university degree in fisheries management, marine policy, marine biology, environmental management or a related field, and a minimum of 5-7 years’ previous experience in managing marine conservation program(s).
  • The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills, especially writing (including previous experience in preparing funding proposals and donor reports) and public speaking skills, and must also have demonstrated success in fundraising and donor management.
  • Candidate must have demonstrated proficiency in leading a large, multi-faceted marine conservation/management program, and must be an inspirational and passionate mentor to younger staff.
  • Experience in multicultural settings is considered essential. 

Preferred

  • An advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in sustainable fisheries/marine resources management is highly preferred, as is previous experience working in Indonesia (including Indonesian language skills).
  • Experience in MPA management planning and/or marine policy development is desirable, as is demonstrated experience working with a wide range of stakeholders, from national-level government officials to village leaders, as well as local and international NGO and university partners.
  • An extensive network of institutional and private donor contacts is highly desirable.
