Description

The Iceland Forest Service (Skógrækt ríkisins) coordinates a wilderness management volunteer project in Thórsmörk and Goðaland. We are now looking for volunteers to join us in 2016.

1, 29.05.16 – 09.07.16
2, 17.07.16 – 27.08.16

We are looking for volunteers to join us for 6 weeks next summer. The team’s main tasks are maintaining hiking trails in the area, trail mapping, survey work, GPS data collection and a special erosion repair project in badly damaged areas close to the fresh lava from the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption. This project combines practical conservation work in one of the most beautiful parts of Iceland with an opportunity to complete the famous 4-day Laugavegur hiking trail from Landmannalaugar to Thórsmörk. These placements are an opportunity to get to know this amazing area and play an important role in helping to protect it.

No previous experience of this work is necessary, as training will be provided. We are looking for participants who have some experience of camping and hill walking, enjoy wilderness landscapes and are ready for a challenge. Iceland’s notoriously changeable weather means that our teams have to be well prepared with good waterproofs and tents. Due to the strenuous nature of our work, participants must be physically fit and many of our worksites are in quite remote locations so we do a lot of hiking to get to them. Applicants must be over 20 years of age. There is no participation fee.
