The Great Basin Institute is working cooperatively with Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge to provide field assistance for hydrologic data entry and sampling, as well as restoration monitoring and maintenance, at the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Amargosa Valley, NV. The Hydrology Technicians duties will focus on (1) developing a Refuge-wide water monitoring database and data entry, (2) conducting systematic water quality sampling, (3) establishing and maintaining long-term photo monitoring points at existing and future restoration sites, and (4) maintaining existing restoration sites in Ash Meadows NWR. The objective of this work is to:
•    Utilize the water quality database to assess data gaps and guide future water quality monitoring efforts in Ash Meadows NWR;
•    Establish long-term, repeatable sampling locations and data to understand how restoration activities influence water quality trends in Ash Meadows NWR;
•    Using photographs, document changes in wetland and riparian habitat following restoration activities in Ash Meadows NWR; and
•    Maintain desirable terrestrial and aquatic vegetation communities, post-construction.

Compensation and Timeline:
o    Rate of Pay: $18.59/hour
o    July 2011 – June 2012, with extension through June 2013 pending funding and favorable performance reviews
o    Health and Dental benefits
o    Full time, 40 hours per week
o    On-Refuge housing provided (subject to favorable evaluations of cleanliness/maintenance)

Location:
Ash Meadows NWR, established June 18, 1984, is located approximately 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Ash Meadows is a literal oasis that lies within the Mojave Desert. The refuge is comprised of over 23,000 acres of spring-fed wetlands and alkaline desert uplands and provides habitat for at least 24 plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. Additionally, Ash Meadows is home to at least 82 species of spiders, 4 species of scorpion, and 5 species of snake, some of which are venomous. The selected individual will work in/near habitats where these species and other biting and stinging insects are present.

The Technician will need a personal vehicle for non-work related trips. The nearest town is Amargosa Valley, which is located approximately 8 miles from the refuge with a single casino/restaurant. Personal amenities are available in Pahrump, NV located approximately 30 miles from the refuge.

Qualifications:
o    Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences (e.g. watershed science, geology, biology, forestry, soil science or related field) with emphasis on hydrology related coursework – candidates with advanced degrees encouraged to apply;
o    Previous field experience maintaining stream gauging stations, measuring stream discharge, and familiarity with ground water monitoring well installation;
o    Comfortable operating, maintaining, and trouble-shooting electronic data collection equipment;
o    Experience working on long-term resource monitoring project;
o    Plant identification and/or soil classification skills a plus;
o    Experience using hand-held GPS equipment for data collection and/or navigation;
o    Ability to read and navigate using topographic maps and a compass;
o    Understanding and/or experience using ArcView GIS software, helpful;
o    Experience with Microsoft Access database software, desirable;
o    Willingness and ability to work in harsh, ever-changing desert conditions, including extreme temperatures, independently or as part of a team;
o    Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience; and
o    Valid, clean, state-issued driver’s license and familiarity driving 4WD vehicles on- and off-road.
