Description

The hydroclimatologist will carry out research on global hydroclimatology, using global precipitation, climate and streamflow data sets and simulations from global climate models and hydrological models. Some of the important research questions include: (i) how climate and water availability have changed over time (variability over different time scales)?  (ii) has there been changes in the rainfall-temperature-runoff relationship in a non-stationary climate? (iii) how to adapt models to account for changing climate-water relationship and dominant hydrological processes to reliably predict future water availability, and (iv) what are the projections (range and uncertainty) for future water availability and the implications on water security in Australia and globally?

The position will be based in Canberra in CSIRO Land and Water (CLW). CLW has a large group of hydrologists with a strong track record in hydroclimate science, hydrological science and hydrological modelling (see below). The appointee will work with some of these leading scientists to build on current knowledge and to develop new science in global hydroclimatology.

To be successful you'll have:

  • A PhD in hydrology or related discipline
  • Research experience in hydrology, particularly in the climate-water area
  • A good publication record in hydrology, particularly in the climate-water area
  • Programming and spatial analytical skills, particularly in working with large time-series and spatial climate and hydrologic data sets
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team towards common goals.

This position will be based in the Surface Water Hydrology Program in CSIRO Land and Water (CLW) (http://www.clw.csiro.au). The Surface Water Hydrology Program is one of nine research programs in CLW. The Program has about 50 hydrologists, many with acknowledged international expertise in hydrological science, hydroclimatology, hydrological modelling, river system modelling and irrigation hydrology.

The Program delivers its research mainly through CSIRO Water for a Healthy Country (WfHC) Flagship (http://www.csiro.au/org/HealthyCountry.html).
