Job/Research Summary The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The NREL Computational Science Center (CSC) has an immediate opening for a High Performance Computing Systems Engineer. This senior position is responsible for implementing and operating HPC systems and related infrastructure in support of Science and Technical computing in support of NREL’s mission.
Job Duties Vision and Planning:
• Help develop and articulate vision, and strategic planning for the Computational Science Center’s (CSC) Systems Team.
• Establish infrastructure to support NREL’s HPC research efforts
• System architecture, design, implementation and integration into the Scientific Computing HPC environment and systems performance analysis.

Technology Tracking: 
• Assess new computing technologies and the feasibility of system enhancements to determine potential value
• Identify emerging HPC and Storage technologies to be assimilated, integrated, and introduced within the infrastructure
• Ensure that CSC stays current and competitive with respect to HPC and Storage infrastructure & services

Day-to-Day Operations:
• Operational and technical team leadership for the “day-to-day” and ongoing projects work and operations of the CSC HPC environment and ESIF data center operations
• Maintain the integrity and continual operation of the CSC mission critical computing, parallel and archival storage systems, and data center networks.
• Maintain cyber security and privacy of the information and computing systems, communication lines, and equipment.
• May be required to undergo enhanced background investigation.
Required Education and Experience Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes Applies extensive IS expertise in specific field and has full knowledge of related disciplines. Evaluates new hardware, software, systems tools and applications and makes procurement recommendations.

Excellent leadership and project management skills. Skilled in analytical techniques, practices and problem solving. Extensive programming and architecture abilities with various computer software programs and information systems.
Additional Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes • 5+ years proven track record as an HPC Systems engineer
• Experience with high performance computers and associated high performance networks and storage systems
• Experience with developing and implementing cyber security controls.
• A solid foundation in high-performance computing, experience with large supercomputers and knowledge of the applications that run on them
Preferred Qualifications Preferred Skills:
• Installation and maintenance of clustered environments, including automated installation methods; 
• Management of Linux operating systems in a large scale system environment; 
• Distributed file systems (particularly Lustre); 
• Scripting languages Perl, Python, Shell(s), Expect; 
• Batch schedulers (Moab), mail, software license management system 
• Monitoring tools (Nagios); configuration management tools (Puppet, CFEngine); 
• Solid understanding of networked computing environment concepts; 
• Enterprise level directory services (LDAP); TCP/IP, Ethernet and Infiniband/OFED; 
• Installation and maintenance of web servers; 
• Storage systems and integration of storage and backup solutions with HPC systems.
• Familiarity with key middleware for parallel clusters (MPI, OpenMP, parallel profilers, debuggers, etc.); expertise with configuration of system libraries;

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work as a team player is required;
• Must be a proactive and solution-oriented problem solver; 
• Ability to bridge gaps between domain language (engineering, science) and computing solution language; 
• Customer focused;

• Clear dedication to excellence and advancing beyond the current state; 
• Strong personal motivation. 
• Good networking skills, able to develop and maintain relationships with wider HPC community.
• Currently holds or has ability to obtain a Security Clearance, preferred.
