Description
IMPORTANT:  This Advertiser has requested that applicants MUST be National Residents / Valid Work Permit-holders.  Other applicants need not apply.

We are a well-established and respected software consultancy with an impressive portfolio of predominantly mapping and database applications used in the environmental and conservation sectors.  We have no marketing or sales staff and our continued growth (we presently have 34 staff) is based largely on repeat work and the recommendation of existing clients.

We are a Microsoft Partner and so work predominantly, but not exclusively with Microsoft technologies.  We also make extensive use of open source technologies, particularly around mapping. In the end we simply decide on the most appropriate tools for the particular project and the particular client.

In the last few months alone we have been working on dozens of interesting projects for clients including Historic England, Natural England, the RNLI, the National Trust, Natuurmonumenten, the Welsh Government, English Heritage, The Ramblers, several local authorities, Wildlife Trusts and the Church of England! More information about the company can be found on our website at www.esdm.co.uk (which we know needs updating) and about some of our work at www.esdm.co.uk/portfolio

If you want to live and work in a National Park, undertake varied and challenging work, be part of a friendly and growing team and provide solutions to some of the UK’s  and Europe’s leading conservation organisations - then we would like to hear from you (so long as you are also supremely talented that is).

Nature of work

The position will be based within the small and busy HBSMR development and support team. HBSMR (Historic Buildings Sites & Monuments Record) is the UK leading database / GIS application for the management of Historic Environment Records. In addition to an ever-increasing client base, the application is being continually improved with annual maintenance releases and new modules.

Developed in partnership with English Heritage it is now used by around 75 organisations across the UK and also has a small number of overseas users. Increasingly we are being asked to build web and mobile applications around HBSMR and other cultural and heritage datasets and helping to specify, test and support such systems is an important part of the role. There is significant opportunity for the role to be developed according to the skills and interests of the appointed person.

 The core activities are:

  • To undertake software installations and upgrades at client sites across the UK.
  • To complete data migrations from a variety of client platforms for use within company software applications.
  • To develop custom components and configurations for clients (e.g. custom tables/forms/report/macros/web pages)
  • To deliver training courses.
  • To provide remote technical support to clients.
  • To contribute to technical developments through the production of development specifications, testing and production of manuals.
  • To attend appropriate conferences and undertake sales-related activity as required, including the production of quotations and tender submissions.
  • To ensure that administrative issues are quickly and efficiently dealt with.
  • To play a part in the development of HBSMR and related development projects, depending on skills and experience.

The company aims to recruit talented and enthusiastic individuals and prefers to evolve positions around each person’s strengths and interests. All staff enjoy a high degree of autonomy and commitment and enthusiasm are highly valued.

exeGesIS is a small and very busy consultancy and we try to take on consultancy work and that is both interesting and keeps the company moving forward. There is always scope for enthusiastic staff to help drive the company agenda and to develop new areas of work in relation to their own strengths and interests.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • In-depth MS Access and/or Sql Server skills with understanding of database structures and principles (likely to have been acquired through at least two years of experience)
  • GIS user experience, preferably ArcGIS and/or MapInfo and/or QGIS
  • Heritage information management experience, or experience gained in another environmental management related discipline
  • Graduate qualifications in archaeology, another environmental discipline, and/or an IT discipline
  • Confident presentational and client-facing skills
  • The maturity to be self-organised and motivated
  • A driving licence

Any of the following would be a bonus but not essential:

  • Familiarity with a variety of operating systems and networks
  • SQL Server (or similar RDBMS) database administration experience
  • GIS scripting experience,
  • Programming experience,
  • Web design experience,
  • Knowledge/experience of html/css/xml/xsl
  • Post-graduate qualifications in an archaeological, environmental or IT discipline
  • Experience of working on or managing a historic environment record information system or similar

 Remuneration

£24,000 - £40,000 is pretty much the range and you can expect to be towards the top if you are highly skilled and experienced. At the lower end you still have to be good (but not as good) and with bags of potential.  We will also pay you overtime if you wish.

We are recruiting to permanent positions. Permanent positions are based in Talgarth in the Brecon Beacons National Park, although some remote working is supported.

What next?

We would like to hear from you if you are truly interested in working with us. If so, then please send us:

  • A detailed CV
  • A self-assessment of your technical skills, identifying the number of years’ experience and categorising expertise as: Basic, Working, Advanced or Expert (we’ll leave it to you to decide what these categories actually mean).

Deadline for receipt of applications is 09:00, Monday 24th August. Please email to Richard Griffiths:  richardg@esdm.co.uk

Thanks for your interest.  We hope this document gives you the information you need about us and who we are looking for, but if you feel like you need to know more than give us a call. Crispin Flower or  Jon Young will be happy to chat.
