GRADE: HEO

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) exists to tackle challenges to our environment, our economy and the future security of our energy supplies.


The Offshore Environment Unit (OEU) is responsible for developing the environmental regulatory framework for the UKCS, and for administering and ensuring compliance with the regulatory regime relating to offshore oil and gas exploration and production, offshore gas unloading and storage and offshore carbon dioxide storage.


Within OEU, the Environmental Management Team (EMT) is primarily responsible for the assessment and approval of activities at the planning stage, prior to commencement of the activities.

Vacancy description

Salary: £25,261 to £30,424 + £22,235 Environmental Specialist Pay Enhancement
The main responsibilities are:
• reviewing environmental impact assessments and approval of offshore energy-related activities (offshore oil and gas activities, offshore gas unloading and storage activities and offshore carbon dioxide storage activities). The work areas include:
o initial applications for licensed areas;
o applications for exploration surveys;
o applications for drilling and well intervention operations;
o applications for proposed developments;
o applications relating to marine discharges and atmospheric emissions; and
o applications relating to the final decommissioning of offshore facilities.
• providing advice to operators on legislative and procedural matters;
• liaising with statutory consultees and other environmental bodies; and
• the management of a number of environmental projects and research activities funded by DECC.

Essential: Experience (ideally at least 5 years) in relation to relevant offshore activities, or the environmental impact assessment or regulation of those activities (the level of experience and range of specialist skills will be assessed against the level of the post) coupled with relevant knowledge of offshore environmental impacts.

Qualifications

A relevant degree or equivalent qualification, or a post-graduate qualification in one of the following areas:
• Biology, Bioscience, Biochemistry, Marine Biology, Microbiology or Zoology;
• Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Pollution, Environmental Law, Marine Resource Development and Protection.
