The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) exists to tackle challenges to our environment, our economy and the future security of our energy supplies.


The Offshore Environment Unit is responsible for developing the environmental regulatory framework for the UKCS, and for administering and ensuring compliance with the regulatory regime relating to offshore oil and gas exploration and production.


The Offshore Environmental Inspectorate is primarily responsible for regulating activities once offshore operations commence by investigating whether the requirements, restrictions or prohibitions imposed by the legislation have been, or are being complied with. We are looking for talented, experienced and suitably qualified professionals to join us as Inspectors in Aberdeen.

Vacancy description

Salary: £25,261 to £30,424 + £22,235 Environmental Specialist Pay Enhancement

As part of a dynamic team your role will be diverse and involve all aspects associated with the regulation of environmental legislation and pollution prevention within the offshore oil and gas industry, offshore gas unloading and storage activities and offshore carbon dioxide storage activities.
You will work closely with offshore operators to ensure satisfactory implementation and compliance with offshore environmental regulations through assessment, inspection, investigation and enforcement of matters covered by legislation.
Contribution to the fulfilment of a planned inspection programme to achieve agreed targets will be the integral part of your role and you will take responsibility for maintaining a regulatory overview of a portfolio of operators and their offshore assets.
You will investigate breaches of offshore legislation and this may involve the preparation of reports to the relevant prosecution authorities.
You will participate in an on call incident response rota to ensure that operators respond to any pollution incident in accordance with their oil pollution emergency plans.
Whilst inspection will be the main focus of your job you may also be required to undertake other activities in the support of the regulatory function to help achieve DECC objectives to maximise economic recovery of oil and gas taking full account of environmental and social objectives.
You will need to actively develop and maintain effective liaison with assigned industry representatives, other Government departments and agencies as well as other non-Governmental organisations on environmental issues.

Essential: Applicants must have experience (ideally at least 5 years) in an appropriate discipline in the oil & gas industry and possess a detailed knowledge of the industry’s general operations.
It is an essential requirement of the post that you pass the Offshore Medical and Survival Course.

You must have a degree or higher qualification in one of the following: Environmental Law; Environmental Management; Environmental Science; Chemistry; Biochemistry; Biology / Bioscience; Marine Biology; Microbiology; Zoology; Geology; Geophysics; Petroleum Engineering or Engineering.
