The ICCT has an opportunity as an Intern or Junior Fellow in its Washington D.C. office to work in our heavy-duty vehicle program. This position will be attractive for researchers with interests in the freight transportation and efficiency technology. We expect that applicants will have an undergraduate degree in a technical discipline such as engineering, environmental science, economics, or physics, although comparable experience will be considered. Preference will be given to students with, or working towards, postgraduate (e.g., M.S., or Ph.D.) qualifications.  The successful applicant will work on one or more projects focused on technologies to improve heavy-duty truck efficiency.  Applicants that have exceptional credentials, will have completed their university training, and are interested in working for up to 6 months will be considered at the Junior Fellow level. An outline for the main project will be developed, in partnership with the successful applicant, within the following areas:

  • Assessment of the potential for energy savings and emissions reductions from heavy-duty vehicle efficiency technologies, like improvements from advanced engines, aerodynamics, and tires
  • Analysis of the cost effectiveness heavy-duty vehicle efficiency technology
  • Review of “SmartWay” programs and lessons learned in the US and globally

Our Heavy Duty Vehicle Program is also actively engaged in the development of regulatory standards to promote the use of efficiency technology in the U.S., Europe, China, and Brazil.  The successful applicant may also be asked to contribute to other projects that work toward the broader mission of the ICCT. This unique ICCT position provides an excellent opportunity for an early-career researcher to learn about opportunities to reduce emissions and petroleum use from trucks, and about how to work in a dynamic, policy-oriented setting.

  • Advanced experience with MS Excel, and proficiency with MS Word and PowerPoint, are required
