This job helps to ensure that the environment and natural resources of Wales are sustainably maintained, enhanced, and used by the people and communities of Wales in the present and for the future. You will do this by acting as the advisor on NRW’s duties as they relate to improving the health and well-being of Wales’ people and communities. This encompasses providing evidence, guidance, and advice to inform legislation and policy, and providing advice and support for programmes, activities and interventions aimed at increasing people’s engagement with the natural environment for health and wellbeing benefits, including increasing physical activity, maximising mental health benefits, and overall psychological well-being. 

Job Specific Responsibilities  

Delivering results

  • To be the lead advisor for NRW on the health and well-being benefits of the natural environment, developing and providing appropriate guidance and advising on evidence based interventions.
  • Help coordinate health-related activity across NRW and provide internal guidance on health improvement and well-being as they relate to the natural environment in a way that ensures staff across NRW understand the relevance of their work to the health and wellbeing agenda
  • Work with NRW’s Senior Social Researcher and other relevant specialists to ensure our advice is evidence based in order to effectively influence and liaise with national and UK-wide organisations and networks.
  • Develop and coordinate national programmes and support local programmes that are aimed at increasing people’s health and wellbeing, particularly those that seek to improve people’s health through their recreational engagement with the natural environment and landscapes of Wales.
  • Promote and increase the recognition of the benefits of natural resources for health and well-being, both internally and externally, and through working with others.
  • Support and facilitate the use of appropriate monitoring and evaluation tools to capture NRW’s contribution to health improvement and well-being, and facilitate the roll out appropriate tools to our partners and stakeholders.
  • Lead on NRW’s response to consultations relating to health improvement, well-being and physical activity, including NRW’s involvement with the development and implementation of Active Travel plans.
  • Lead on national partnership activity and support local partnerships that are aimed at increasing levels of physical activity and at delivering improved health and wellbeing outcomes through engagement with the natural environment and landscapes of Wales. 

Building strong stakeholder relationships

  • Provide advice and guidance to the Welsh Government, Public Health Wales, and others on the positive contribution of the natural environment to health and well-being.
  • Represent NRW on relevant stakeholder groups in Wales, UK, and Europe.
  • Build appropriate partnerships with external networks, other public sector bodies, third sector organisations and universities.
  • Develop and manage effective internal stakeholder relationships across directorates in connection with health and the natural environment.

Setting strategic direction

  • Assess new evidence and trends in the health improvement sector, identifying strategic policy developments.
  • Provide strategic advice to the organisation on policy developments, opportunities and future direction relating health improvement and well-being. 

Job Specific Requirements

  • An excellent understanding of the relationship between health improvement, well-being, and the natural environment.
  • An excellent understanding of the evidence base on the benefits of the environment to health improvement and well-being.
  • A degree in a relevant subject.
  • Excellent contacts and knowledge of the health sector in Wales and the UK, as well as other sectors, organisations and policies that have relevance to NRW’s health and wellbeing work.
  • The ability to build strong working relations with a wide range of stakeholders, from practitioners to policy-makers and universities.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken, including the ability to influence, communicate complex research, and provide clear advice and guidance to colleagues and others.
  • The ability to formulate clear, concise responses to policy and other consultations.
  • The ability to take the initiative and to plan and manage work for yourself and on behalf of the organisation to a high technical standard within a context of competing priorities and timescales.
  • The ability to develop clear specifications for work and to manage contracts.
  • The ability to manage national partnerships, including NRW grant funded partnerships. 

Due consideration has been given to the Welsh language requirements for the post and the existing skills within the team. Taking this into consideration the Welsh language skills required for the post are at Level 1 and with a commitment to develop skills to a higher level as the nature of the role demands. 

Level 1 - The ability to use basic Welsh conversational phrases (eg “bore da” – “good morning”) and to pronounce Welsh place names correctly

The post holder is responsible to: Team Leader - Recreation, Health and Wellbeing. 

This post is responsible for: Leading on NRW’s strategic policy, planning and advisory function in relation to health improvement and well-being benefits of the natural environment. 

Status  

This is a permanent, pensionable full-time appointment of 37 hours a week.
