We are pleased to announce a new senior Human Resources role in an exciting time of development and growth for ClientEarth. We seek a highly effective and strategic person to lead, develop and manage the organisation’s global HR function. We are seeking either a Head or Director of the Human Resources, based on the right candidate’s experience.

The Head or Director of Human Resources will lead the development of people, culture and organisational capacity. 

The role combines significant senior strategic responsibility as well as direct engagement in the day-to-day running of the HR function, including creating, updating, managing and/or implementing HR policies and systems. He/she will play a central role in supporting managers in the implementation of effective employee relation strategies throughout the employee life cycle. 



About you

You will be a senior Human Resources professional with demonstrable experience and capability in HR management and organisational development, alongside experience leading change in complex environments, preferably within an international and interdisciplinary context. You will be an outstanding people manager, with the ability to lead and inspire people at all levels. You must be problem solver and decision maker and have a hands-on approach to work.

You should have a strong understanding of the charity/non-profit HR world. Ideally you will have worked with HR systems or similar databases.

Job focus

Over the past two years the organisation has focussed on developing core HR systems to get the function up and running effectively following the start-up period. Resources to devote to HR have until now been limited, but the current growth of the organisation is presenting us with a unique opportunity to take HR to the next level.

The Head or Director of Human Resources will lead the development of people, culture and organisational capacity. 

The role combines significant senior strategic responsibility as well as direct engagement in the day-to-day running of the HR function, including creating, updating, managing and/or implementing HR policies and systems. He/she will play a central role in supporting managers in the implementation of effective employee relation strategies throughout the employee life cycle. 



Working relationships

The position reports to the COO and will manage an HR officer in London and supervise the Brussels and Warsaw administrators in HR-related functions.
 
The role will have key relationships with the senior management team, with all people managers in London, Brussels and Warsaw and with all staff in general.



Job responsibilities

  • Responsible for the strategic development of the HR function and its effective operational alignment with other functions;
  • Work with the senior management team and managers to plan, design and align team structures and roles in line with organisational and programmatic goals and needs and availability of resources and opportunities;
  • Develop a longer term perspective on the kinds and levels of capabilities needed to develop the organisation including potential for expanding programmes, geographies and functions;
  • Create, improve and implement human resources policies, systems and processes throughout staff cycle and in line with organisational strategy;
  • Provide training and coaching to managers across the offices to ensure best practices in people management are consistently applied and in line with existing HR policies;
  • Focal point for all HR matters in ClientEarth’s offices (currently in London, Brussels and Warsaw and soon to be in Beijing and New York), including providing legal advice to staff in relevant legislation with the support of our pro-bono networks;
  • Continue with the development and implementation of a Learning and Development strategy and programme for all offices and functions and management of a training budget;
  • Develop and implement travel safety and security policies and protocols.


This list is not exhaustive and the selected candidate will be required to undertake other relevant tasks.



Experience & knowledge

  • An established record of leadership in a similar role, preferably in the charity/non-profit sphere and within an international organisation
  • Substantial experience of operational management of the HR function and of change management
  • Sound knowledge of the charity sector and people management in such environment
  • Ideally strong knowledge of employment law in countries of operation
  • An awareness of environmental issues and a commitment to ClientEarth’s values



Competencies & skills

  • Maturity, seniority and leadership skills to interact with, motivate and guide staff at all levels including managing up
  • Ability to deal with situations diplomatically and sensitively and maintain confidentiality 
  • Ability to give and receive feedback sensitively and objectively and a willingness to challenge constructively
  • Ability to solve problems with reference to existing policies and procedures
  • Fluent in English with excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills and ideally working knowledge of French or Polish.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative manner, with diverse multicultural internal and external individuals
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to set priorities and manage multiple tasks, react positively in light of shifting and competing timelines and to work well under pressure
  • Core IT skills (able to use MS Office, Internet, databases, teleconferencing and social media)
  • Innovative, creative and motivated to achieve results
  • Adaptability and personal responsibility with a commitment to personal development



Qualifications

Qualified CIPD professional or senior HR professional qualified by experience



Location

This position is based in London with regular travel to other ClientEarth offices. 



Salary

Starting salary of £55,000 (pro-rata), plus the possibility to join our 4% contributory pension scheme after 3 months of employment.
The role will be part-time for 3-4 days per week.
