Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is filling the position of

Head of Technical Support Unit (IPCC WG III)

located at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (Germany).

This position directs the Technical Support Unit (TSU) and reports to the Co-Chairs of IPCC Working Group III. The Head of the TSU is responsible for all organizational and logistical aspects during the scoping, preparation, review and completion of the Working Group III contributions to the cycle of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) to be published in 2013/2014. These contributions include the integrated assess­ment report and other special / technical reports as well as several expert meetings within the WG3 mandate.

The Head of the TSU will work very closely with the three Co-Chairs and the Bureau of WG III in shaping and guiding the assessment process. This position will also assist the Co-Chairs in the liaison with WG I and WG II of IPCC as well as with the IPCC Secretariat in Geneva. The Head of the TSU is the principal access point for scientists contributing to AR5.

The Head of the Technical Support Unit will be assisted by a high-level team at the Potsdam-Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), consisting of scientists, scientific editors and team assistants.

This is a fixed term position until December 2013 funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany. Employment is through PIK with an appointment as soon as possible subject to final project approval by the funding organization. Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (TV-L Ost).

Requirements:
PhD in economics, engineering, natural sciences or related subjects;
scientific publications in refereed journals, routine in report writing and editing;
ability to lead a staff of 5 to 10 ranging from administration to science;
ability to plan, organize and execute complex multi-task problems;
high mobility and motivation to work efficiently in an international science community;
social skills for negotiations;
written and spoken fluency of English at science and negotiation levels;
experience in UN processes, in particular IPCC, would be an asset but is not required.
