Across the modern energy landscape, engineering is playing a more important role than ever before. But this is engineering with a different kind of emphasis. Technical delivery, combined with opportunities to shape Government policy, influence market direction and inform decision-making across UK energy networks. Infrastructure development, combined with the power to impact on supply, sustainability and value for money for energy consumers.

Engineering at Ofgem means being able to understand technical strategy at a macro level. We regulate £multi-billion infrastructure projects, in an energy market that is undergoing constant diversification. So we’re looking for Engineers with more than just technical knowledge. As Head of Technical in Electricity Transmission, you’ll not only lead technical input across all areas of regulation of electricity transmission infrastructure, you’ll also liaise at a senior level with external stakeholders to enhance understanding of industry developments and regulatory responses. Your commercial acumen will be as strong as your technical expertise and we expect that you’ll have high-level experience of managing and developing technical asset investment programmes or policy in a commercial or regulatory environment.

As you take a leading technical role in the development and delivery of competitive tender regimes for offshore transmission, you’ll draw on your solid understanding of contract management principles and policies and bring to bear your experience of evaluating investment decisions and cost information. An engaging, effective and persuasive communicator, you will be as comfortable presenting Ofgem’s proposals to stakeholders at bilateral meetings, industry events and forums as you are at offering technical advice and recommendations to the senior management team. Your personable, inspiring and collaborative nature will also see you motivating and developing diverse teams of interdisciplinary professionals, harnessing the support of external consultants where necessary. In return you can expect a high degree of autonomy and the opportunity to influence the future energy infrastructure, in a flexible working environment quite unlike those offered by the rest of the industry.

Ofgem can offer you a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes:

  • Up to 30 days’ annual leave
  • Excellent training and development opportunities
  • The opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements, which include a valuable range of benefits
  • Flexible working hours and family friendly policies
  • Subsidised gym and restaurant
  • Interest free season ticket loan
