The Head of Programmes is responsible for directing the Trust's conservation programme, managing the programme teams and maximising the organisation's potential as a force for conservation.  The land purchase and protection elements of the Trust’s mission work hand in hand with its ecosystems services programme, with a clear, joint focus of habitat protection for the benefit of biodiversity. The successful applicant will have excellent strategic planning
skills and a track record of staff management in the not-for-profit sector, in delivering conservation results through negotiation and communication skills. He or she will have the personal tools to successfully negotiate complex conservation transactions, including delivering conservation goals through public and private funding working with the staff of the Trust and their overseas project partners.             

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Head of Programmes (HOP) directs all aspects of the Trust’s conservation activities, working through overseas
    NGO project partners.
  • The HOP establishes overall programme priorities for conservation programmes and develops and implements strategies and plans for accomplishing them in line with decisions made by the Trustees.
  • The HOP is responsible for the success of individual and team growth and performance to fulfil the Trust’s mission.

Qualifications and person specification

 The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate:

  •  Education to degree level or equivalent
  • 10 years of project management, preferably in non-profit conservation project management
  • Strong and proven track record of achieving results; well-organised and self-directed, politically savvy and a team player
  • Strong supervisory and team management expertise, including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance.
  • Skilled at building partnerships with overseas conservationists and other stakeholders.
  • Experience in some or all of the following;  timber land use and management issues; forest economics, business operations and compliance; government and non-governmental contracting and grant making; ecosystem planning; conservation tools such as land acquisition with private and public partners, conservation easements, conservation restoration.
  • Ability to design, implement and direct complex and diverse projects, encompassing multiple programmes and coordinating work of other professionals in and outside the organisation to support programme objectives.
  • Familiarity with or ability to quickly learn about ecosystems, flora, fauna, geography, culture, socio-economics, conservation partners and political and government institutions.
  • Knowledge of current trends in land conservation and natural resource preservation; experience and proven ability in applying this knowledge to set and achieve land conservation priorities.
  • Excellent public speaking, presentation and written/oral communication skills.
  • Business experience developing, directing and managing multiple projects and budgets and implementing strategic programme goals.
  • Flexibility, optimism, good humour and a passion for the work of the WLT
  • Experience in MS Office, Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Ability to manipulate, analyse and interpret data
  • Ability to speak Spanish would be desirable.

The post is full time, based in the World Land Trust’s headquarters in Halesworth, Suffolk, but will involve some travel (national and international), and working frequently in the field.
