Are you ready to look to the future? In order to meet ever increasing demand an exciting new opportunity has become available for an experienced, technically minded individual with senior stakeholder management experience to work at the cutting edge of policy development and implementation in the resources and waste sector 

Working collaboratively as part of the CIWM Policy & Technical team, the successful candidate will lead on the development, management and delivery of CIWM’s policy and technical knowledge capability to support CIWM’s profile, influence and reputation whilst delivering value for CIWM members and the wider sector.

With the opportunity to work in a dynamic sector that has major role to play in supporting the clean growth and net zero agendas, the ideal candidate will have a sound knowledge of policy development related to resources and waste or in a similar regulated industry such as water, energy, or renewables.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced policy and technical lead to drive an ongoing programme of exciting change within an organisation at the forefront of environmental policy development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop the Policy & Technical Team, including line management, capability planning and professional development
  • Manage the day-to-day planning, delivery and dissemination of CIWM’s policy and technical work
  • Working with the Policy & Technical Team, manage the development and delivery of a Policy & Technical Strategy that supports the priorities set out by the Scientific & Technical Committee and CIWM’s strategic corporate objectives and priorities.
  • Work collaboratively with the other Heads of Department and team members to ensure that CIWM’s policy and technical work programmes and outputs support CIWM members.
  • Work with the Director of Policy, Knowledge & External Affairs to ensure the effective engagement of CIWM members, CIWM Centres and key sector stakeholders in CIWM’s policy and technical work
  • Manage the development, delivery and dissemination of policy and technical research and analysis to support CIWM’s profile, influence, and reputation
  • As a member of the management team, play a full role in ensuring CIWM meets its strategic business objectives

Skills & Experience:

  • Several years’ experience gained in a policy development or strategic planning role, including experience of working across national boundaries
  • Demonstrable experience of working effectively with Government departments and regulatory authorities across a range of policy and regulatory issues
  • Proven experience of managing technical and policy work streams, including formal and informal consultations
  • Proven track record in developing and maintaining strategic partnerships and relationships with key external stakeholders
  • A good understanding of both the UK and international environmental policy context, including resources and waste management.
  • Strategic planning and project management skills
  • Analytical skills and ability to synthesise complex policy and technical information into communicable outputs for a range of audiences
  • Collaborative approach to information gathering and sharing with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills alongside public speaking experience
  • Budget and time management skills with the ability to prioritise and co-ordinate multiple work streams and changing priorities
