Ideal for a suitably qualified and experienced senior person with a commitment to SUSTAINABILITY , the Head of Environmental Sustainability is a key role within the University Estates Directorate and will report directly to the Director of Estates. The Head of Environmental Sustainability will be responsible for providing strategic direction to the University and implementing long term plans to improve the University's environmental sustainability. This is a role that involves long-term planning and foresight and includes helping to develop policy as well as monitoring current and future European and UK legislation. As well as developing, implementing and managing a vigorous programme of environmental improvement, the post holder will be expected to carry out research into current and emerging technologies and management options and for implementing any promising initiatives for use in this University. This post requires a highly motivated and enthusiastic person with considerable experience and a firm commitment to the aims of sustainability.

This is a key role that will advise the Director of Estates and the University on policy and potential opportunities for the University to implement appropriate aspects of environmental management including carbon production, energy and waste.
Responsibilities of the Post Holder

  • Take responsibility for the development, implementation and management of Environmental Policies within the University focusing on energy, carbon, waste, water, travel and other major environmental impacts.
  • Develop and implement an Environmental Management System for the University.
  • Review and analyse current and future legislation and advise the University on the impact of these.
  • Support the University Environmental Panel and other Committees as necessary.
  • Review ‘best practice' and innovations in environmental and energy management and advise on the suitability of these introductions into the University.
  • Review and identify funding opportunities for environmentally related projects and co-ordinate bids to obtain such funds.
  • Manage the in-house environmental team (currently four people)
  • Commission and manage external consultants and contractors to undertake specific projects, as necessary.
  • Plan, procure and implement development and training programmes across the wider University to raise environmental awareness, as necessary
Essential

  • Science or Engineering Degree
  • Experience of analysing legislation and developing policy
  • Direct experience of an Environmental Management System in the private sector or a university
  • Previous work experience in an environmental or sustainability related role
  • Experience in managing and developing staff
  • Business case development experience
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets
Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in any environmental science
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body
