Food & Water Watch is a leading national consumer advocacy organization that runs dynamic, cutting edge campaigns challenging the corporate control and abuse of our food and water resources. Since 2005, we have won significant victories to protect our food and water. Our work has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post and other major media outlets.

We seek a 3-month contract policy analyst and advocate to represent Food & Water Watch and to lead our efforts in Hawaii to protect our ocean resources from reckless expansion of the factory fish farming industry. The policy analyst and advocate will coordinate with DC based staff and work with a diverse set of constituents in Hawaii who care about our oceans, such as recreational fishermen, commercial fisherman, divers, environmental organizations, cultural organizations and the general public.

This position is based in Hawaii; specific location is flexible.  Some travel will be required.  There is potential for extension of this contract.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Work with existing allies and recruit other organizations and individuals to take action for our campaign to protect waters around Hawaii.
  • Develop Hawaii-specific outreach materials.
  • Work with local media, including organizing press conferences, placing op-eds and radio interviews.
  • Plan creative campaign events that may include, town-hall meetings, call-in days, letter-writing campaigns, or others.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education: College degree required.
  • Experience: At least 4 years experience in advocacy on public policy issues, and/or grassroots/field organizing, including working with volunteers and the media.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with Hawaiian fishing and/or environmental communities; knowledge of local and/or national marine issues.
  • Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong interpersonal and planning; excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Capabilities: Demonstrated leadership capability; creativity; ability to work well with a wide variety of people and to coordinate diverse tasks; ability to present technical concepts to a mass audience; can-do attitude and commitment to public interest work. Must be able to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks at once.

Competitive salary, commensurate with experience.
