Introduction to PEC

The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) is seeking to hire a part-time Habitat Program Assistant to support PEC’s habitat program throughout the region. PEC, founded in 1972, is based in Warrenton, Virginia and serves nine counties in Virginia’s northern Piedmont area. PEC now has more than 35 employees in nine offices, and has been instrumental in the protection of over 369,000 acres and the development of a broader land ethic in the region.


Description of Position

The Habitat Program Assistant works to support PEC’s growing Sustainable Habitat and Land Management Program. The position will provide field and office support to diverse projects throughout PEC’s nine county region including Eastern brook trout restoration, Go Native Go Local, Virginia Working Landscapes, and management of PEC-owned properties. The Assistant will support landowner outreach through property site visits and public events. This is a seasonal, part-time position (20 hours per week) from March to December 2014. Continuation of the position after 2014 is dependent upon funding and performance review.

Qualifications

  • A B.S. or equivalent degree in ecology, agriculture, forestry, natural resources, wildlife biology, fisheries, or related field. A graduate degree is not required, but preferred. 
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in relevant field work, land management, or related experience.
  • Familiarity with the ecology of the Piedmont including plants, plant communities, and wildlife.
  • Able to undertake rugged field work with a positive attitude.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in working with diverse landowners, including rural landowners and the farming community. Demonstrated commitment to land conservation.
  • Experience using Arc GIS 9 (or newer) is preferred.
  • Self-starter who requires minimal supervision.
  • Willing to work irregular hours periodically, including some weekends and evenings.
  • Reliable personal transportation required (compensated at federal mileage rate).


Compensation:

Hourly salary commensurate with experience.
