Through the GLOBE (Growing Leaders on Behalf of the Environment) internship program, The Nature Conservancy hires undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent college graduates (2015, 2016, and 2017) to fill paid internship positions during a 10-week summer internship. Our mission is to provide a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between academics and the real-world conservation work that contributes to the health and sustainability of our world. The GLOBE Program recruits individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences who are interested in contributing to our conservation goals in various fields. The GLOBE Program offers a structured orientation, professional training, network opportunities, mentoring program, and real work experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The GLOBE interns will work on a small team (2-3 interns) to help Boston’s urban program promote the Habitat Network within local watersheds. Habitat Network (www.habitat.network) is an online tool and citizen science site aimed at promoting natural areas and habitat in place on lawns and other traditional landscaping. Duties could include mapping natural areas within the city, assisting the related Healthy Trees, Healthy Cities program with urban tree planting and monitoring, covering urban conservation volunteer events for our marketing department, representing Habitat Network at community meetings and public events, and assisting with social media. Successful applicants will also be invited to create and lead an effort to promote Habitat Network to young adult audiences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • HS Diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in an undergraduate program, graduate program, or a recent graduate (within two years of graduating from an undergraduate or graduate program) for Biology, Communications, Conservation/Environmental Studies, Government Relations, Marketing or related field, or equivalent.

  • Completion of The Nature Conservancy’s LEAF internship program

  • Experience using social media for professional purposes.

  • Communications skills which include social media and/or public speaking

  • Willingness to work with minors and ability to meet internal Youth Safety qualification standards. To be Youth Qualified, one must 1) consent to and successfully complete a background screening; 2) sign the Commitment to Youth Safety; and, 3) complete two online courses (approximately 30 minutes each) through Learn@TNC

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with videography, interviewing or journalistic writing.

  • Experience with mapping applications or software.

  • Familiarity with Greater Boston.

  • Experience engaging with difference communities and representing The Nature Conservancy in public situations.

  • Experience recording scientific data

*WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT *

  • Minimum exposure to adverse conditions (summer heat in the city) and limited travel may be required. Minimal physical labor (observing natural areas, planting trees) will be required.

  • This is a full-time, temporary internship position with a position term of June 5 – August 11, 2017.
