Description

Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels - Developing Community Action (SSRS-DCA) is a project to secure the long-term future of red squirrels in Scotland by building capacity among communities of volunteers and land managers to take on some of the essential protection measures required to protect the red squirrels in key areas.

As part of this programme we are now recruiting three temporary grey squirrel controllers to contribute to the project’s co-ordinated landscape-scale approach by helping to reduce grey squirrel numbers in Forest Enterprise Scotland forests and preventing recolonization of grey squirrels in three target areas: Tweeddale, Teviotdale and Solway Forests.  We are looking for people with a love of outdoor working who are either self-starters already experienced in grey squirrel control work or keen newcomers willing to work closely with highly experienced permanent staff to learn the skills under close supervision.  May suit a self-employed contractor.

There will be opportunities for successful holders of the temporary posts to carry out similar 4-6 month seasonal posts in subsequent years.

The successful candidates will possess a SVQ/NVQ level 2 or equivalent qualification in Game and Wildlife  Management or related discipline or relevant experience of game keeping, invasive/non-native mammal control or pest control, along with good understanding of conservation principles, practices and legislation.  You should have the ability to keep accurate records in Excel.

Relevant previous experience is desirable, together with experience of working with foresters, landowners and members of the public. Knowledge of forest and native tree species and familiarity with the local area to be covered would be advantageous.

Some out of normal hours working will be required and you must possess a full clean driving licence.

The positions are expected to start by 1st June and run until mid-August 2018.
