Position Summary

TU is seeking a Great Lakes Stream Restoration Manager to collaborate with National Forests in the Great Lakes Basin on planning, assessment, design, construction and monitoring of aquatic habitat restoration projects that benefit sensitive aquatic species and other aquatic resources valued by the U.S. Forest Service. Projects will occur on and adjacent or downstream of National Forest Systems lands and will provide multiple benefits to the U.S. Forest Service and the local community including flood resiliency, improvement of aquatic habitat and water quality, and protection of aquatic health and biodiversity. The position will be based in northwestern Michigan and will focus initially on projects on and adjacent to the Huron-Manistee National Forest.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Coordinate stream geomorphic surveys (dimension, pattern, profile, substrate), and stream habitat assessments, as well as aquatic passage assessments on and adjacent to Great Lakes National Forests.
• Coordinate the design of habitat improvement, bank stabilization and aquatic organism passage projects on and adjacent to Great Lakes National Forests.
• Oversee both budget and work estimates.
• Oversee permitting, funding and coordinating implementation of restoration projects on and adjacent to Great Lakes National Forests.
• Plan multiple restoration projects simultaneously on and adjacent to Great Lakes National Forests.
• Coordinate with the U.S. Forest Service Virtual Design Team for review of all road-stream crossing and constructed stream channel designs.
• Meet with the U.S. Forest Service to identify priority watersheds and projects on and adjacent to Great Lakes National Forests and provide annual performance reports to document progress.
• Coordinate with TU chapters and councils within each watershed on projects and project funding.
• Coordinate press opportunities to highlight project implementation, when and where appropriate.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree a plus.
• Professional experience in project management and river restoration required.
• Excellent organizational and problem solving abilities.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and supervise multiphase stream restoration projects.
• Experience with project and grant management, and project permitting.
• Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders including federal and agencies, farmers, biologists, engineers, and other landowners.
• A working knowledge of principles and practices of fisheries and aquatic resource management with a particular emphasis on stream habitat requirements of brook trout.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Passion for protecting and restoring trout populations and their watersheds.
