The Organization

Panthera, founded in 2006, is the world’s leading organization devoted exclusively to the conservation of wild cats and their ecosystems. Utilizing the expertise of the world’s premier cat biologists, Panthera develops and implements global conservation strategies for the most imperiled large cats – tigers, lions, jaguars, cheetahs and snow leopards. Representing the most comprehensive effort of its kind, Panthera works in partnership with local and international NGOs, scientific institutions, local communicates and governments.

Panthera’s Grant Writer

Panthera seeks a full-time Grant Writer to be based in New York City. The position will be focused primarily on writing funding proposals and detailed reports for Panthera’s Development Department, as well as contributing to the identification, solicitation, and stewardship of new funding sources. The position will also contribute to other writing needs especially for popular articles and related media. The incumbent will have extensive familiarity with conservation issues, and will be required to become extremely familiar with Panthera’s field programs entailing travel to field sites. The position will report to the Director of Development and work closely with Panthera field staff, to help grow Panthera’s fundraising capacity.

Essential duties include:

  • Write, edit and steward funding proposals and detailed reports to funding sources; also contribute to annual reports, pre-proposals, letters of inquiry, program updates, popular media and other communications in collaboration with leadership/program staff;
  • Identify, solicit, and steward Foundation, Corporation and Government donors to increase existing support to Panthera and significantly expand the base of support;
  • Set and meet annual income goals and contribute to building annual project budgets in collaboration with Panthera field staff and leadership;
  • Provide support for the Director of Development, assisting with fundraising requirements and special projects as needed.

Qualifications

  • A strong working knowledge of wildlife conservation issues and/or experience working for a conservation entity; Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in biology, wildlife science, or related field;
  • Strong general/popular scientific writing record for various audiences, especially for funding sources, the general public and the media; a record of peer-reviewed writing for technical audiences is desirable but not essential;
  • Proven track record of submitting successful grant applications to various sources, including foundations, corporate sponsors, and government agencies;
  • Proficiency in researching, interpreting and analyzing diverse information from the field, and working within deadlines to provide funders with clear and targeted information;
  • Skilled at maintaining good relations with donors through regular communications and updates on program activities covered under grants;
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, verbal skills, written skills, and judgment; confidence in contributing to meetings with funders and Panthera staff when appropriate;
  • Fluency in a second language, particularly Spanish, is desirable;

Compensation

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and record of successful achievement.
