The Grant Writer is primarily responsible for developing and writing grant
proposals to government entities, foundations and other grant-making organizations,
and will persuasively communicate Groundwork Somerville’s mission and programs
to potential funders. Reporting to and working with the Executive Director,
the Grant Writer will assemble and submit grant requests, establish and
maintain personal contact and relationships with foundation contacts, conduct
prospect research, and maintain a calendar of submission, reporting and
other deadlines. This position is for a temporary, part-time grant writer,
and has been made possible by a specific grant. As such, the precise scheduling,
and duration of the position are flexible based on candidate’s availability
and preference (e.g. 6 months at 24-hours/week, or 8 month, 18-hour/week,
etc.). Total available salary is $15,000.
Ideally, the selected candidate will be able to work some of their weekly
hours from the Groundwork Somerville office in order to get to know the
staff and programs. Our current funding priorities are focused primarily
on operations support to engage a permanent development director, hire a
youth leader, and provide competitive wages for full-time program staff.
Responsibilities include
Developing and writing grant proposals to foundations and other grant-making
organizations, persuasively communicating the organization’s mission and
programs to potential funders;
Assembling and submitting grant requests, including letters, proposals,
and reports;
Ensuring prompt acknowledgement of new grants;
Managing timely submission of letters of inquiry, proposals, and reports;
Conducting prospect research;
Prioritizing to keep multiple proposals moving in a timely manner and meet
deadlines
Preferred Qualifications:
Successful past experience of grant writing and management
Existing knowledge of sources of potential funding.
Familiarity with youth development, racial equity and environmental advocacy
programs and language.
Previous experience with non-profit fundraising.
Experience working in deadline-driven environments.
Able to work well in a team environment, handle multiple assignments and
meet deadlines.
Able to monitor and meet income goals.
Experience with Raiser’s Edge
Knowledge and Skills:
Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured,
articulate, succinct, and persuasive proposals.
Strong editing and research skills.
Strong interpersonal skills, for creating and cultivating donor relationships.
Attention to detail.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Knowledge of fundraising information sources.
Experience with proposal writing and institutional donors.
Knowledge of fundraising techniques and strategies.
Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect
research.
Knowledge of budgets as they relate to proposals and grants
Strong contributor in team environments.
