Governmental Communications Manager Washington, D.C.
Ducks Unlimited, the world’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving North America’s continually disappearing waterfowl habitats, seeks an experienced and motivated communications professional to lead our public policy office’s advocacy communications and public outreach efforts. The selected individual will create and implement a national media plan to achieve policy objectives; establish media relationships and place stories in national and regional print and broadcast media; serve as the point of contact for information requests and interviews and coordinate on other communications projects with regional colleagues.
Candidates must be highly motivated self-starters and have 3-5 years hands-on experience in communications. Must be able to conceive plans and possess very strong writing and speaking skills and manage distribution of communications materials to the highest professional standard. Position reports to DU’s Director of Communications, but will work in DU’s Governmental Affairs Office in Washington.
Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of congressional process and congressional press corps, and/or familiarity with wildlife- and sportsmen-related conservation issues.
- Ability to travel.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding of social media platforms.
- Experience managing a website through a content management system.
- Ability to use a video camera and/or edit short videos.
- Proficiency in graphic design (Adobe programs) and media software (Vocus).
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with individual policy staff (D.C. and regionally based) to create, implement and expand strategic communications plans to support and reach national policy goals.
- Promote engagement from a strong volunteer membership on policy priorities.
- Author and manage nationally distributed monthly conservation policy newsletter, as well as a weekly policy priority update to an internal audience.
- Coordinate with national and regional communications staff to further public policy objectives.
- Act as a point of contact for other conservation organizations to coordinate multi-group activities.
- Develop media relations with reporters in both outdoor and national outlets; responsible for placement of stories in national, regional and local print and broadcast.
- Coordinate communication efforts between congressional and federal executive branch offices and Ducks Unlimited.
- Pitch and respond to requests for media and interviews.
- Monitor and report to an internal audience on relevant media activity.
- Write and coordinate distribution of press releases, letters to the editor, talking points and other information and advocacy materials.
- Assist in coordination of the annual DU Capitol Hill Dinner & Auction including preparation of invitations, programs, banners, handouts, etc.
- Identify new communications opportunities to keep DU members and staff, congressional offices and media informed of our policy positions.
