SunEdison/MEMC recently commenced the manufacturing of solar panels in Newmarket, Ontario in compliance with the Ontario Feed-in Tariff Program.

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

The Government Affairs Manager will lead the company’s government affairs efforts (legislative and regulatory) in Canada. This position will monitor developments and work with the Senior Vice President of Legal and Government Affairs to develop and implement appropriate strategies to grow new solar markets and protect existing markets. This person is responsible for working with policy-makers and regulators to develop or maintain solar friendly policies in Canada. In particular, the Government Affairs Manager will take every effort to preserve, promote and improve the Ontario Feed-in Tariff Program. This person must have the ability to operate in a fast paced environment with little or no supervision and achieve several disparate goals concurrently across the region.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Regulatory and legislative responsibility for all of Canada, serving as SunEdison’s liaison with elected officials, government, local distribution companies and regulatory departments.
  • Utilize a deep understanding of renewable energy policy, solar-specific policy initiatives, technical issues and financing structures to influence province-based policy towards support of solar market expansion. A comprehensive understanding of the Ontario Feed-in Tariff Program (rules and contracts) and Ontario specific regulations pertaining to the interconnection and operations of solar projects is essential.
  • Defend existing working policies against diminution or elimination.
  • Serve as strategic resource for all SunEdison business units, including, business development, marketing, finance, legal and project operations.
  • Identify opportunities (financial, technical, business development, etc.) created from policy initiatives set at the local, provincial, or national level.
  • Work with the Government Affairs team to track global trends in the solar industry and renewable energy policy, and apply lessons-learned to Canadian initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, engineering, public policy or other relevant subject. Advanced degrees preferred.
  • 5-10 years experience working for an energy company, government policy position, renewable company, renewable trade association or similar.
  • Relationships with Canadian policy-makers.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-starter with sound judgment.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
