Description

This is an unpaid summer internship that offers an extraordinary experience in public conservation education, animal husbandry, volunteer management, and journalism. The position requires a minimum of 12-16 hours of work per week for a minimum of 3 consecutive months during the free-ranging season (May through October). The intern will assist with animal tracking, coordination of volunteers, public outreach, and contributing content to and assistance with the publication of a bi-weekly GLT newsletter.

Candidates may choose to submit a proposal to conduct non-invasive, observational research. Support will be provided to any candidate choosing to conduct research by means of guidance in proposal, protocol and ethogram creation, data collection training, and scientific literature review. Any candidate who wishes to conduct a short research project must include a research proposal with their application materials.

Minimum Commitment
6 shifts per week for 3 consecutive months (one shift is 2 hours)
Training
Must attend full training session (approximately 2-3 hours) prior to tracking. Classes are held mid-April and several other times during the season. Actual dates TBD.

Intern Tracker Duties and Requirements**
** To some degree, the internship can be tailored to meet individual intern’s interests.

1. Assist Program Coordinator in all aspects of Program; duties as assigned shall include, but may not be limited to assistance with:
Scheduling
Coordination of personnel
Training personnel
Updating manual and interpretive data
Maintaining tracking equipment
Maintaining free-ranging exhibit
Literature searches
Other duties as assigned
2. Observe and monitor the welfare of the animals,
3. Control crowds
4. Interpret to visitors about the tamarins, and the Golden Lion Tamarin Free-Ranging Exhibit and Program
5. Contribute content and assist with publication of bi-weekly newsletter
6. Light keeping duties
7. Preparation of animal diet
8. Proof of a current negative TB test (within 12 months)
9. A minimum commitment of 3 consecutive months of service during the 2009 season (April/May through October, inclusive)
10. A minimum commitment of 6 shifts service each free-ranging week during the 2009 season (Thursdays through Sundays, inclusive)
11. Reliable transportation
12. Successful completion of the required training program.
13. Completion of all volunteer paperwork and meeting all requirements as set forth Zoo Atlanta Human Resources Department.
14. Paying the $50.00 program fee (covers cost of T-shirt, name tag, and printed materials)
15. Must have completed at least two years of college in a related field such as biology, zoology, psychology, etc.

A minimum commitment of 3 consecutive months of service during the 2009 season (April/May through October, inclusive)
