This position is for the Oaks and Prairies Joint Venture through a partnership with the American Bird Conservancy and USFWS.
Duration: February – April (possibility for continued employment for a grassland bird project May-June)

Salary: monthly salary $2,500 with housing included
Job Description: Crew lead (1) needed for GCWA monitoring project as part of a cooperative agreement with USFWS. The project will survey the entire breeding range of the species in central TX (34 counties) at approximately 1,200 point count locations.
Primary job responsibilities: • Early-morning point counts to survey for GCWA • Field supervision of 4-5 technicians and survey schedule with support from Oaks and Prairies Joint Venture Staff • Data entry and proofing. • Other responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) • Equipment maintenance • Managing databases • Proofing entered data, etc.
Candidates will be expected to work long hours with early starts in relatively difficult field conditions (e.g., high temperature, plenty of sun, rough terrain, lots of hiking). Housing will be provided and may include hotels, bunk houses, and other forms of field housing. As such, candidates should be flexible about housing and sharing rooms with other technicians. A significant amount of travel will be required. Preference will be shown for individuals that are willing to use a personal vehicle for field work on rough roads requiring high ground clearance. Mileage will be reimbursed. The ideal candidate will be able to transition to crew lead for the grassland bird monitoring project in TX from May – June, depending on quality of performance (partnership with the American Bird Conservancy, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas State University, and other OPJV partners). Point count surveys are conducted along roadside routes within 20 counties. Job responsibilities may be concurrent; therefore, time management skills and ability to supervise quality data collection are imperative. This position is an excellent opportunity to work with multiple partners on GCWA and grassland bird conservation across TX.
Qualifications • Excellent time management skills • Ability to oversee field technicians and fieldwork with minimal daily supervision • Excellent navigational abilities • Meticulous data collection skills • The ability to work independently • Good inter-personal skills • A valid driver's license. • Ideal crew leader will have extensive experience conducting avian point counts, • Experience with leading a field crew (4 technicians), • Experience with identification of Texas grassland birds, and estimating distances to detected birds. • Must be 18 years old or older and a US citizen. • Selected candidate will need to be able to pass a hearing test.
