About BGCI

BGCI is an international conservation charity that aims to conserve threatened plants, the continued existence of which is intrinsically linked to global issues including poverty, human well-being and climate change.  BGCI has over 700 members and associates mostly botanic gardens, arboreta and plant conservation organisations in 118 countries; we have offices in the USA, China and Russia.

BGCI works with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity on the implementation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC). The GSPC is an internationally agreed plan for plant conservation with 16 targets to be achieved by 2020. BGCI is looking for a research assistant with an interest in botany / plant conservation / biodiversity to assist us with carrying out a review of global plant conservation activities and to contribute to a high-level report on the status of the world’s plant diversity.

 Duties will include

  • Reviewing literature, reports and websites to identify case studies on plant conservation
  • Desk-based research on the importance of and economic value of different groups of plant species (medicinal plants / timber / energy / food etc.)
  • Drafting and editing text for reports
  • Updating information on the BGCI and related websites
  • Developing an image ‘library’ for use in reports on plant diversity and conservation

Skills and experience required

  • Qualification or relevant experience in biodiversity / plant conservation or a related topic
  •  An interest in the environment and conservation
  •  Understanding of botanic gardens and living plant collections (desirable)
  •  Effective communicator able to write technical information clearly and precisely
  •  Excellent attention to detail and proof reading skills

This role would suit a person with a conservation or botanical background wanting to gain experience in an international conservation organisation and enhance their portfolio.  It would suite a recent graduate, someone returning to work or someone wanting to change career.

Apply by sending a covering letter and a CV to Catherine Thums at catherine.thums@bgci.org by Monday 10 March 2014

BGCI will reimburse travel costs from within the Greater London area (zones 1-6) and a lunch allowance of £3 a day.

Start date to be confirmed
