Description

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs. 

We wish to appoint a Glacier microbiologist / Biogeochemist. Based in Cambridge, travelling to the Antarctic, you will be involved in a project to study the productivity and biogeochemistry / microbiology of terrestrial ice-bound ecosystems of the maritime Antarctic. The project aims to understand whether these ecosystems contribute significantly to the global carbon cycle.

With a good first degree and PhD in geochemistry, biochemistry, microbiology or equivalent, you will have a sound working knowledge of productivity measurement, ion determination and basic microbiology. You will also have effective IT and oral and written communication skills, together with the ability to work in a team and to tight deadlines. In addition, you will be willing to spend 6 months working at an Antarctic research station.

Qualifications: Research degree /PhD

Duration: 2.5 Year Fixed Term Appointment ( FTA ) - including 6 months in the Antarctic

Salary: Salary will be in the range of £26,180 to £29,410 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a defined salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave.
