Description

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

The British Antarctic Survey has a vacancy for two fixed-term positions in glacier modelling. Interviews for both of these positions will be held at the same time.
Ice Flow Modeller #1: The spatial and temporal distribution of 20th Century Antarctic Peninsula glacier mass change and its drivers.
Based within the IceSheet program at our Cambridge office you will be a part of a team investigating the drivers of 20th Century glacier change along the Antarctic Peninsula. You will use state-of-the art numerical flow models to test hypotheses about the causes of observed changes in ice volume and calving front positions. This is a part of a NERC funded project involving a number of other partners. You will work closely with remote sensing specialist at BAS and the Univ. of Newcastle.

Qualifications: You will have a Ph.D in the earth sciences (for example glaciology, oceanography) , physics or mathematics, some prior experience in running numerical models, and good programming skills (for example Matlab or Python).

Duration: The position is a full-time fixed position of 12 month duration with an expected start date of 1st September 2014.

Salary: Salary will be in the range of £26,715 to £30,000 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a defined salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave.
