Description:  Ducks Unlimited, the international leader in waterfowl and wetlands conservation, seeks a highly motivated individual to serve in a 12-month conservation internship position in its Annapolis, MD field office. The intern will work closely with biologists and engineers responsible for on-the-ground habitat restoration throughout the Atlantic Region, as well as assist with landowner education and outreach, partnership development, public policy, and research opportunities.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform biological inventories and habitat assessments

  • Help with topographical surveys and engineering design

  • Assist in grant writing, permit applications, and reporting

  • Provide GIS mapping and GPS data projection services

  • Attend meetings, forums, and related symposia

  • Conduct public presentations and outreach

  • Support public policy efforts in region

  • General office duties as needed

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Applicants must have, at minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife or wetland related field; an advanced degree is preferred. Relevant experience in waterfowl or wetland ecology is helpful; freshwater fisheries a bonus. Applicants should also have a basic knowledge of federal and state wetland conservation programs, policies, and/or laws.  Experience developing partnerships with conservation organizations is helpful.  Experience working with government officials is beneficial, but not required.

 

Successful applicants should be able to accurately identify most wetland flora and fauna. Experience with basic topographic surveying equipment is desirable, but not required. Applicants should also be proficient with ArcGIS and other software packages.

 

Successful applicants will be highly motivated; have excellent oral and written communication skills; and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Applicants must also be willing to travel, sometimes for extended periods, and work in physically-demanding settings and in all weather conditions.

 

Salary: This is a 12-month position with a stipend of $1,800 per month.  Housing is not included with this position.
