Job purpose

This job helps to ensure that the environment and natural resources of Wales are sustainably maintained, enhanced, and used by the people, communities and economy of Wales in the present and for the future. You will do this by providing NRW with the best possible Geographic Information Systems (GIS) service.

Job Specific Responsibilities

  • Undertake GIS tools and applications development work for GIS Desktop and Web using appropriate programming languages
  • Undertake GIS database development work and integration with NRW’s RDBMS and other corporate systems
  • Undertake configuration and testing of new GIS software, tools and applications
  • Provide support and maintenance for GIS software and applications
  • Provide spatial data processing services to automate data workflows using Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) tools
  • Provide spatial data Quality Assurance services to validate data for storage in relational and non-relational databases
  • Analyse and manipulate spatial datasets using GIS Desktop software, 3rd Party tools, and Database software
  • Provide support for publication services for spatial data and metadata
  • Provide advice, guidance, training, and support to GIS users through the GIS Helpdesk service
  • Provide technical advice on spatial systems, software, and data to support NRW Business Projects
  • Deal with enquiries from users and other staff
  • Help to implement NRW’s Knowledge and Information Management Strategy and specific spatial strategies
  • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others and comply with all health and safety legislation as appropriate.
  • Carry out other general duties as necessary
  • Consistently meet the standards required to fulfil the service expectations of your internal and external customers/citizens and partners.

Job Specific Requirements

Essential

  • An in depth knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS and/or MapInfo Professional Desktop software including a knowledge of SQL
  • An understanding of spatial RDBMSs. Microsoft SQL Server preferred
  • An understanding of web mapping and web services.
  • An understanding of Python scripting, or MapBasic, or .NET programming, or another GIS programming language or other developer language
  • A good understanding of spatial data and spatial metadata
  • An understanding of Extract, Transform and Load tools. FME preferred
  • Excellent customer support and communications skills
  • Ability to manage projects
  • The ability to currently and legally drive a car in the UK.

 Desirable

  • Experience of developing and supporting GIS Tools and applications in a desktop or web environment together with a knowledge of a GIS or other developer language

Due consideration has been given to the Welsh language requirements for the post and the existing skills within the team. Taking this into consideration the Welsh language skills required for the post are at Level 1 - The ability to use basic Welsh conversational phrases (eg “bore da” – “good morning”) and to pronounce Welsh place names correctly

Salary

£24,578-£27,947

Status

This is a permanent, pensionable full-time appointment of 37 hours a week.
