The University of Bremen, Faculty Biology/Chemistry, in a joint appointment procedure with the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W3) for Polar Biological Oceanography

with effect of 1 October, 2012.
?

The Alfred Wegener Institute is an internationally recognised centre for polar and marine research and makes significant contributions to earth system and climate research in polar regions and coastal waters. Its work is aimed at identifying past and future changes in the global environment from a marine and polar perspective. AWI provides excellent conditions for biological oceanographers in both polar regions. The ice-breaking research vessel “FS Polarstern”, operated by AWI, is one of the most sophisticated polar research vessels in the world.

We are searching for a biological oceanographer with high interest in interdisciplinary research working on the interactions of the polar pelagic ecosystems with environmental and climate variations and their impact on biogeochemical cycles. The successful candidate is expected to develop a process oriented research programme employing modern analytical methods and cutting edge field-based approaches.

The professorship is associated with the leadership of the Polar Biological Oceanography section at AWI (http://www.awi.de/en/research/research_divisions/biosciences/polar_biological_oceanography/). The successful applicant is expected to develop an internationally recognized research programme within AWI’s Biosciences division and carry out interdisciplinary work in cooperation with the Climate Science and Geosciences divisions at AWI. Teaching obligations amount to two hours per week at the University of Bremen in the marine biology master degree course in English. The willingness to participate in long ship expeditions (several months) is expected.? ?

The following qualifications are required: a university education in biology or related disciplines; a PhD as well as outstanding internationally recognized scientific achievements; experience in managerial functions, in managing seagoing expeditions, in raising external funding and in teaching.

AWI and the University of Bremen are Equal Opportunity Employers and strongly encourage applications from women and individuals with disabilities. AWI and the University of Bremen are supportive of the needs of dual-career couples and committed to promoting the work-life balance of their staff.

Applicants should submit (1) an application letter, (2) a curriculum vitae including the list of publications, (3) a statement of research accomplishments and future plans, (4) a statement of teaching experience and interests and (5) three selected publications.

Please forward your application, preferably via email, by April 20th, 2012 under reference number 21/G/PROF to:
