The University of Bremen, Faculty Physics/Electrical Engineering, in a joint appointment procedure with the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres (HGF), invites applications for a
Full Professorship (W3) for Physical Oceanography of the Polar Seas
with effect of 1 October, 2012.
Candidates with outstanding scientific qualification in physical and observational oceanography are encouraged to apply. The applicant should have a strong research competence in studies of physical processes and measurement methods which contribute to long term observing systems. Special interest in processes in Polar Regions is expected. It is further expected that the incumbent will maintain and expand the existing multi-disciplinary, integrated observing system and use the observations in collaboration with the modelling sections to better understand changes in the Arctic and Antarctic along with their impacts on sea ice, ecosystems and the global climate system.
The professorship is located in the Climate Science Division at the AWI and is associated with the leadership of a scientific section. The successful applicant is expected to carry out interdisciplinary work in cooperation with scientists from the AWI Geosciences and Biosciences Divisions and from the Institute of Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen. Teaching obligations amount to two hours per week at the University of Bremen in the physics degree course, with a focus on Environmental Physics and the master degree course in Environmental Physics, respectively. Didactic engagement, the ability to give courses in German and English and the willingness to participate in long expeditions (several months) are expected.
The following qualifications are required: a completed university education in physics, meteorology or oceanography; an outstanding PhD as well as other scientific achievements that are excellent when compared internationally; experience in managerial functions, in managing seagoing expeditions, in raising of external funding and in teaching.
